The former Brennan alpha, with his slight Irish brogue, hunter-green eyes, and wide smile, is not someone you’d soon forget. I certainly hadn’t. Many of the pack elders attend the annual dominance assessment, administered by the council for all wolves the year they turn ten, and Atticus was present at mine. Is it possible that he really doesn’t remember me? He gave no indication that he did, but then again, he took the guys back to the office right after they placed their order. If he does remember, is he in there telling them? Are they calling my father? The longer the four men stay locked away, the more my mind races.

Too worked up and not paying attention, I turn the corner and slam right into Felix’s broad chest. His hands wrap around my upper arms to keep me from falling, and I suck in a ragged breath. “S-sorry.” I keep my gaze fixed on the top button of his shirt, afraid of what I’ll see in his eyes. Anger? Repulsion? Relief to finally be rid of me?

Instead of letting go once I’ve regained my balance, he continues to hold me close, his touch gentle. “Are you okay?” he asks, his voice gruff.

“I’m fine,” I manage to force out through trembling lips.

His thumbs brush the exposed skin of my arms as he releases me. Stooping to meet my gaze, he scans my face for a beat before offering a playful smile. “You didn’t give away our table, did you?”

I shake my head, not trusting my voice. I want to believe that his familiar banter and teasing smile means that he doesn’t know who I am; that, for now, my daughter and I are still safe, but his eyes blaze with an intensity that wasn’t there before, and a shiver of unease runs down my spine.

“Good,” he says, shooting me a wink.

I force a smile and turn toward the bar and the stack of drink orders waiting for me there. With shaky hands, I pull out the ingredients for the first drink. It takes a few moments of staring at the purple liquid in the martini glass before I realize that I’ve added blue curacao to the raspberry lemon drop. Damn. I shake my head and dump the contents. Focus, Poppy. A few minutes later, the guys’ food is delivered to their table, so I take a fortifying breath and head back in their direction. “Can—” I clear my throat and try again when nothing comes out. “Can I get you anything else?” My gaze flits to each of the guys, waiting for their responses. My stomach lurches, and my heart thumps violently against my chest. Felix’s eyes aren’t the only ones that hold a new level of intensity.

“I think we’ve got everything we need, hun,” Atticus says, smiling warmly.

I rush away from the table, confused and scared. I can’t get a read on them. Atticus’ smile. Felix’s playful banter. The intensity in each man’s gaze. Do they know? If they
